Temporary Festival Assistant – Bloom! 2020 Make It York is looking for an enthusiastic and creative individual to take on the temporary role of Festival Assistant for Bloom! 2020, which takes place in June in York. This is a varied and exciting role requiring an organised, highly-motivated and resourceful individual to support in the delivery of this busy, city-wide horticulture festival. Background In July 2018, York held its first Bloom! festival. Drawing on the 250 year celebrations of the Ancient Society of York Florists – the oldest florists society in the world – the festival brought a quirky, fun, engaging and colourful event to the city. Offering over 120 events over a 4-day period, the festival programme included pop-up gardens, workshops, a traditional flower show, a trail around York’s hidden gardens, a veggie street food market, and everything in between. The festival engaged with 100+ businesses, individuals, community groups and charities from the area and was supported by a range of partners and sponsors, the headline sponsor of which was the York BID. Bloom! and its supporters established a legacy fund to ensure that the 2018 festival’s achievements are continued. This has seen the delivery of three legacy projects and a mini village-fete-style event, held over two days in the Dean’s Park at York Minster. 2020 sees the return of the city-wide celebration, this year with the overarching theme of ‘Art in Nature.’ The festival will include pop-up gardens, a sculpture trail, a schools project, a window dressing competition and more. The overall number of events will be less than in 2018, but each will be bigger, better and more impressive. The event runs from June 20th – 28th 2020. The role The contract is for 4 months: late-March to mid-July 2020. Working the equivalent of 3 days (22.5hrs) per week (a maximum of 51 days to be worked over 17 weeks.) The Festival Assistant will report to the Bloom! Festival Producer and the Head of Marketing & Communications Responsibilities will include: Co-ordinating the delivery of the Bloom! Sculpture Trail Liaising with sculptors, venues and technicians Planning the programme of installation Providing the main point of contact for all enquiries regarding the trail Administer the bloom@makeityork.com email address, respond to, forward or escalate any enquiries Working with the digital team to create and deliver a strong social media campaign in the run up to and during the festival Helping to nurture the partnerships that have been established between festival partners and Make It York/Bloom! Working with the Make It York team to maximise the success of the festival, particularly the PR &Communications and Digital Teams Assisting onsite and in the office during the festival itself, as well as during the set up and take-down Deputising for the Festival Producer as required The requirements We are looking for someone with the following skills and experience who is determined to help create a brilliant event: Flexibility Ability and willingness to react quickly to solve issues Experience of working on a festival or large scale events Experience of managing social media channels Administrative and process skills Effective communication skills with the ability to manage stakeholders Self-motivated and happy to work solo at times A creative and artistic approach to problem solving Ideally, an interest in horticulture and/or the arts Some marketing or PR experience would be beneficial but not required A full clean driving licence and if possible, access to a car (mileage will be paid) Contract We are offering this temporary opportunity for 4 months at £10 per hour and a maximum total for the project of £3,850 The contract period is from late-March to mid-July 2020 Please note that flexibility will be key in relation to hours as some weeks will require the successful applicant to work more than 3 days whilst others will call for less.
