Job Description

Right now York Dungeon are looking for competent Character Actors on a fixed term basis to support us during the upcoming summer period.

About the role

The York Dungeon is a 75-minute interactive theatrical tour where our guests are transported back in history and recounted tales of York’s murky past by one of our many infamous characters. You could therefore find yourself tackling the role of The Torturer, a warrior from Viking Age York, The Lord Chief Justice, Guy Fawkes, or even Margaret Clitherow, amongst others.

Each character delivers a short, scripted show, which is crafted to be interactive, so improvisation will also form a key part to your performance.

As well as maintaining strong characterisation throughout each show, you’ll also be operating and controlling special effects during your performance, to enhance the whole experience.

At peak times, you’ll be performing shows every 8 to 10 minutes and as this is a dungeon after all, you’ll be working in dark, somewhat confined spaces.

These roles are seasonal until September 2022 to help with the upcoming summer period. You’ll need to be flexible with working hours and days, which will include weekdays, weekends and public holidays as the need arises. Working hours could also include some evenings, for special events such as our ‘Dungeon Lates’ experience.

About you

To succeed in these rather unique roles, we'd like you to have:

  • A background in performance and character acting, ideally with some formal performance training too.
  • Very strong characterisation skills.
  • Strong vocal ability (ideally with a Yorkshire accent, or the ability to portray one convincingly).
  • The ability to learn scripts quickly and be able to take direction and adapt your characterisation portrayal accordingly.
  • The ability to improvise and react to the general public but remain in character.
  • Stamina and the ability to perform shows in quick succession, whilst maintaining a focused high-quality performance.
  • To be a positive, teammate – we're a close knit cast that relies on everyone supporting each other and working as a team.

Why join us?

By joining us, you’ll get the opportunity to really develop your skills by tackling some strong and really quite unique character roles, all in a fun and upbeat environment. We can also offer the following

  • An hourly rate of £10.15, paid fortnightly
  • 25% discount in our retail shops and restaurants
  • 40% online LEGO discount,
  • Access to an exclusive employee discount website
  • Local benefits
  • Merlin Magic Pass – allowing your friends and family free entry into our attractions globally!
